Four Steps to an Enjoyable Hike

Sports And Fitness April 19th, 2009

Some people have fought many years of their lives to preserve the rich heritage of the outdoors and nature we now enjoy. That dedication and effort have been rewarded by fantastic hiking opportunities in our local, state, and national parks systems. In honor of their efforts, let’s break out of our winter hibernation and venture into the crisp, clean outdoor air and hit some of those dirt trails.

Here are 4 steps to an enjoyable hike, no matter where your feet decide to take you.

1. Know the area you will be going into. Although many states, like California, Colorado, or Wyoming have exceptional hiking hot spots, even your local park will have some kind of useful information. Whether it’s a website with information and trail details, or a map at the park office, trailhead, or visitor center, always check before you head out on your hike so you know what to expect.

2. Know the conditions you will be facing, wherever you go. Nothing is worse than traveling to a hiking destination only to miss the hike, because it was raining or freezing and you weren’t prepared. If the trail is flooded out, or snowy conditions have shut it down for an extended period, you should be able to find this out as well. It is also good to know if there are any plants or animals to watch out for at your hiking location. Wiping with poison ivy won’t feel good in the morning.

Think about what you’ve read so far. Does it reinforce what you already know about hike? Or was there something completely new? What about the remaining paragraphs?

3. Wear clothing that works and fits the terrain and hike conditions. There are many options in your clothing arsenal, to keep yourself comfortable, here are a couple of pointers:

- Try and stay away from cotton. Instead, look for synthetic and natural fibers that pull moisture away from your body, or at least stay warm when wet. - Also, go for layers to keep yourself warm, versus carrying around a huge parka, in case you are hit by a freak snowstorm. - The two most important pieces of clothing for any hiker, are good socks and good shoes. Don’t underestimate the pain a hike can cause with uncomfortable shoes and socks. Finally, a hat in cold weather is a great addition, since your body loses over half its heat through your head.

4. In addition to knowing the weather conditions, you will need to be prepared with a first aid kit that matches the hiking you will be doing. In most cases a simple kit will do. You can pick up a simple first aid kit at a local department or sporting goods store. Or you can build you own, which should include these basics: - Different sizes and shapes of bandages and gauzes. - Various types of tape for wounds or fixing tools. - Suntan lotion. - A light emergency blanket (preferably with some kind of water resistance). - Aspirin, allergy, laxative, and anti-diuretic medications. - Small multi-use tool with a knife, scissors, and a needle and thread. - A cell phone can come in very handy in emergencies. It is recommended that you pack all of this in a waterproof bag or container.

These tips should ensure a comfortable, short hiking adventure.

Choosing Hiking Trails - Important Things To Consider

Camping April 19th, 2009

Do you plan to go on a hiking adventure? A hiking adventure can last a few hours or more, or even for the whole weekend. But no matter how long your hiking trip may be, you will need to choose where to hike. And when you do choose a hiking trail, be assured that you have many options. Anywhere in the United States there are hiking trails where you can go to, and some of them might just be a short distance away from your home.

In view of so many hiking trails which you may choose from, it goes without saying that your concern might be on how you can choose the ideal hiking trail for your planned hiking adventure. To be sure, there are lots of factors that you may find worth considering when choosing a hiking trail. Let us briefly discuss these factors for you.

One of the factors which you need to consider when you choose a hiking trail is the level of difficulty there is in a particular hiking trail. As you probably know, the design, format or terrain of hiking trails differ. There are even nature parks that boast of several hiking trails within them. This simply means that you have lots of hiking trails to choose from. So instead of looking at the scenery and aesthetic value of a hiking trail, you can choose the one with a difficulty level that matches your own confidence level. For example, you can try a hiking trail that is intended, or designed, for beginners if you happen to be a first-time hiker.

Along with the difficulty level, consideration for your safety is important and should be a key factor when you choose a hiking trail. You just cannot leave your safety to chance. Check the maintenance conditions of hiking trails you wish to choose from. If it is not possible to see for yourself the condition of a hiking trail, you may try asking around from friends or acquaintances who may have had experiences with it. Another way of getting the information you need is browsing the internet. Look for online discussion boards or websites from which you can gather pertinent information. Then proceed to select the one that you think is safe enough for you to hike.

Related to safety considerations is security. Again check if security measures including security personnel are well in place when you choose a hiking trail. Let not your anticipated excitement obscure the possibility that you might not be familiar with the hiking park or trail you are going to choose. Security personnel around hiking parks can readily help you in case something untoward happens, like accidents or encounters with strangers whose disposition towards you may be suspect.

If you plan to go hiking that may last the whole weekend, or even more than that, you may also be thinking of a camping adventure. Camping happens a lot of times for hikers. In this case you would do well to choose a hiking trail with overnight accommodations. Often this kind of accommodations goes with onsite campgrounds. There would be other things to consider, like gearing up properly and bringing along with you enough food provisions. But if you are inclined to hike only for the day, plans for overnight accommodations may not be that important to consider when you choose a hiking trail.

Another important factor is price. Hiking parks or trails in the US charge admission fees for hikers so that they can get access to them. The rates vary from one hiking trail to the other. They would usually depend on facilities and services they offer. Although these charges are reasonable enough and highly affordable by American standards, you have much to gain and nothing to lose if you take into account the varying charge rates especially if you want to save money.

What we discussed are just some of many other factors which you may do well to consider when you choose your hiking trail. They are meant to guide you as you plan for and go on a hiking adventure. They can help make your adventure enjoyable and memorable.

Your First Hiking Backpack - Interesting Tips For Beginners

Camping April 18th, 2009

If you’re going hiking, having backpack is the most essential item that you need to carry with you, even for the most casual of hikers. Whether you choose to walk on a well used trail that is known for hikers, on a planned trip with a group or a guide, or are taking a more serious hike for many miles, a good hiking backpack is an absolute must have. All backpacks are different as you have a multitude of choices that face you when you go into a store. Salespeople are very good at making things sound tempting or even confusing, so it may not sound so easy to choose a backpack. By doing some research and with some preparation as to what you are looking for, you should have a fair idea when you shop as to what you need. Focus on what you really need and what would be handier and easier for you for your trip.

There are many styles of backpacks available which come in a variety of sizes. Depending on the type of hike you are going on, will determine what would be the most useful backpack to have. By doing your research, you will have considered what things you need before deciding to buy a hiking backpack. If you are planning to just walk during the daylight hours, your bag will just need to be big enough to carry some food and drink for the walking trail; for those unexpected accidents a small first aid kit comes in handy; for warm weather some sunscreen and insecticide, and other neccessities that you may need. For hiking overnight, you will need to bring extra items with you, so a different type of backpack will be needed altogether.

What is most important when choosing a backpack, is one that is comfortable to carry and easy enough for you to carry. You want to avoid aching shoulders and a sore back, straps that will rub and cause blisters, which will make you feel uneasy, anything too heavy, or a bag will not fit all your neccessities. Having to leave something behind which you might find useful later would not be good.

The cost of hiking backpacks vary from as little as $20 to as much as $400, which is dramatic. If you are a beginner at hiking then as a casual hiker, a backpack that is not so expensive would be more ideal. It is early days for you to know whether you will become a regular hiker or not - as some people find that it doesn’t suit them after all. Once you become more of an enthusiast, you can think of investing in a backpack that will accommodate all your essentials for a longer hike.

When hiking, you will be doing a lot of climbing so you need to consider something that is lightweight for you to manage those steeper climbs. Having lots of different compartments for all the little items is handy and you will find backpacks to suit both genders. Men and women are different so we all like to carry different items that we consider are needed. The construction of backpacks are usually designed for the varying builds of men and women as their centre of gravity differs. They need to be good to keep a hiker balanced. Women need shoulder straps that are more curved and comfortable, a shorter torso and a hip belt that is more contoured for their figure.

The ideal size for a backpack to accommodate gear should be approximately 4,000 cubic inches which should be ample enough. By choosing the ideal model that is also light and versatile, it should suit any hiker regardless of gender and size; and for hikes of varying durations and the degree of difficulty. By doing your research and planning ahead, it should be easier to make a decision when you walk into a store and see all the arrays of backpacks, the various sizes and styles, and understand what the sales people are trying to sell you. Make the right choice for yourself.

Northwest Hiking: Hiking The Coast And The Mountains Of Oregon

Sports And Fitness April 17th, 2009

Hiking is one of Pacific Northwest outdoor enthusiast’s favorite activities. Oregon and SW Washington offer an incredible variety of forests, parks and national monuments ready for exploration and appreciation. Hikers should not be taken by surprise in this incredible area of the country however. Forest, coastal lands and cave hiking all present unique challenges to any hiker. The Pacific Northwest can prove to be dangerous if hikers are unprepared.

Forest Trail Hiking

The Northwest’s forest trails are ideal hiking destinations because the scenery and beauty are unmatched by any other location. These trails wind through lush pine and fir tree wooded areas, tranquil open meadows, and creek and river crossed landscapes. The native wildlife - beavers, foxes, deer, elk, songbirds, squirrels - make it an ideal place for nature watchers. Oregon and Washington have very well maintained trailways and they take pride in their stewardship of the forests here. However, hikers should still be prepared for the unexpected in these areas.

The most important item to pack on any hiking trip, especially in the summer months, is water. Food is a close second. Emergency lights and signals are also essential for any recreational hiker. Traditional roadside flares or signal lights are not an option in the Northwest wilderness as likelihood of starting an unintentional fire is very high. A LED emergency light is small, lightweight, affordable, and offers powerful, high-quality light that can be used as a distress signal as well as a flashlight.

A multi-purpose pocket knife is also essential to safe hiking in the Northwest. These tools often include miniature scissors and pliers, tweezers and a compass which can all be useful to a hiker. The basic knife blade in these tools can be helpful to scratch trees and branches in order to mark an unfamiliar trail should you get lost. Consider packing mosquito repellent and sun block when hiking these forest trails as well.

Coastal Hiking

The Pacific Northwest is known for its unpredictable and sometimes treacherous coastal weather. Hikers are advised to dress for the elements when hiking along coast range trails. A rain jacket and sturdy, waterproof boots are essential. The Oregon or SW Washington coast is are often overtaken by dense, heavy fog coverage. These fogs can come in without warning, stranding and disorientating hikers who are unprepared. It is important to bring a powerful LED flashlight or lantern when hiking this area to illuminate the trail or campsite as well as alert help should you need it.

Cave Hiking

Cave hiking is one of the more dangerous forms of recreational hiking. This activity requires specific safety equipment and long-term planning. Along with multiple light sources, appropriate clothing and plenty of food and water, one must also make sure to bring protective head gear, rope, and climbing gloves. Experts recommend headlamps when cave hiking to allow for hands-free hiking. If considering cave hiking in the Northwest, contact a professional in the area who can provide specific equipment needs and precautions.

Hiking the Pacific Northwest trails is an incredible outdoor experience. A summer can be spent enjoying several trails, all with their own unique landscapes and beauties. Whether hiking through the Umpqua or Deschutes National Forests or exploring the Coast’s Oregon Sand Dunes, hikers will not be disappointed so long as they come prepared.

Hiking in the Natural Beauty of the National Parks of the United States

Camping April 15th, 2009

If you enjoy hiking then there can be no better setting for a day’s hiking than the many wonderful national parks of the United States.

At one extreme you have the Badlands of South Dakota and the Petrified National Forest in Arizona and at the other you have the lush green scenery of Crater Lake in Oregon or the Great Smoky Mountains in Tennessee. Then, in between, you have the thick forests, icy lakes and majestic mountains of Glacier Park in Montana or the Rocky Mountains of Colorado, whose 14,000 foot peaks offer some truly exciting hiking.

Of course if you are looking for something truly spectacular then there is nothing quite as stunning as the Grand Canyon in Arizona which many people quite rightly refer to as the eighth wonder of the world. This gash which Mother Nature has gouged out of the earth runs for nearly 300 miles, is 18 miles wide at its widest point and is a breathtaking one mile in depth.

Nature truly provides some wonderful settings for the hiker and another is the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park which boasts several different ecosystems and allows you hike across black lava sands one day and through dense rainforest the next.

And speaking of volcanoes, is there any more spectacular experience than standing right beside Old Faithful in Yellowstone National Park when it sends its pillar of spray high into the air. Yellowstone provides some excellent hiking trails as does the nearby Grand Teton National Park which, in the opinion of many people, is simply one of the most beautiful places on Earth.

For nature lovers a hike through Crater Lake in Oregon is also a must where the giant lake is surrounded by high and densely forested mountains which are home to both bears and soaring hawks. If you enjoy fishing then you will find that Crater Lake has an abundant supply of trout.

Although everyone has their own favorite national park (mine is unquestionably Great Teton) for many millions of people the prize goes to Yosemite.

Yosemite National Park offers many spectacular views including that of El Capitan which is the largest granite outcrop on the planet and whose 3,000 foot sheer face attracts climbers from all over the world. There are also of course Yosemite’s many magnificent waterfalls, of which Yosemite Falls itself is the best known, which splash their way down the mountain sides through dense forest which is crisscrossed by hundreds of hiking trails.

Yosemite is also home to some of the most spectacular sequoia trees to be seen anywhere in the world and no visit to Yosemite would be complete without a hike through Mariposa Grove and the lesser know, but no less spectacular, Merced Grove and Tuolumne Grove.

The list of national parks and their memorable attractions could go on and on and for those living in the United States they fortunately provide more than a lifetime worth of incredible hiking experiences.

Exploring the Newaygo River Valley Wonderland Hiking Trails

Sports And Fitness April 12th, 2009

Exploring the River Valley Wonderland and “feeling good” about it

Newaygo County was named after Chippewa Indian Chief: Naw-wa-goo, one of the signers of the Treaty of Saginaw in 1812. The county has over 230 natural lakes and over 350 miles of rivers and streams. Three huge dams were built after the turn of the century: Croton, Hardy and Newaygo. Croton and Hardy Dams remain today, with Hardy the largest earthen dam east of the Mississippi.

The Muskegon River continues to be the main attraction for summer cottage residents and fishermen, who find it nearly the best source for steelhead in the spring and salmon in the fall anywhere in Michigan. Hiking is excellent, as over half the county is contained in the Manistee National Forest.

Hiking is becoming a desired activity for Newaygo tourists. The ultimate reason to hike is for personal enjoyment, but there are other goals that can be achieved when hitting a trail. Most people enjoy hiking because it makes them feel good to exercise and enjoy nature. Here are three reasons why hiking is becoming so popular.

Getting outdoors – Most of us live and work indoors the majority of our everyday lives. To be outdoors and just enjoy being outside and experiencing all that entails can be the ultimate reason people like to hike. Fresh air, the sounds of birds and other animals, tall trees, blue sky, majestic creeks, flowing rivers and deep valleys all contribute to a sense of contentment and even inner connection to nature and the earth.

Physical Health – Hiking is a very physically healthy activity. It helps improve your circulation, strengthen muscles, build stronger bones, and contribute to overall as opposed to simple walking for exercise, work a variety of different muscles due to the uneven terrain that is found on hiking trails. Climbing, even if it is just up a steep embankment, will increase your strength and improve your sense of balance.

Emotional Health – Leaving the hustle and bustle of our daily routine to hike through trails and into valleys inevitably has a calming effect. Hiking is a great way to ease your mind. There is something that happens after your first few steps on the trail, all the heavy burdens you were carrying around in your mind become a little lighter and sometimes disappear. It becomes easy to open up your mind and think about issues and people. You may very well find your mind opening up to ideas or answers to problems that you had before. It is a great opportunity to contemplate subjects you may have consciously forgotten as well as some that may be fresh in your mind. Hiking simply “feels good”.

Here are a few recommended hiking trails in Newaygo County to explore and experience the great outdoors in Michigan. The following rails ranges from one to five miles long :

The Loda Lake Wildflower Sanctuary found its beginnings in 1938 when the US Forestry Service invited the Federated Garden Club of Michigan to participate in creating a sanctuary for native Michigan plants. The area consists of a small lake, a marsh and wooded area. There are over 150 different species of plants, wildflowers, trees and vegetation marked with posts that correspond to the trail guide available. The trail is about 1.5 miles long. A picnic area with grills and an outhouse is available for use by the trailhead. The sanctuary is located about 7 miles north of White Cloud. Head north out of White Cloud on M-37 and turn west at 5 Mile Road, then turn north onto ***** Ave and drive until you see the sign below. The entrance is right in front of the sign.

The Hardy Dam Rustic Nature Trail is a cooperative project of the Boy Scouts of America and Consumers Energy Employees. The trail is a three mile round trip, along the Muskegon River. The trail is unpaved and and winds over various types of terrain. Be sure to bring a good pair of tightly tied hiking boots as the trail in some places winds along the sides of some very steep hills. Also 26 species of trees are identified along the trail, identified with posts so be sure to pick up your trail guide by the trailhead. Parking is available right by the Hardy Dam at its northwest end.

The

Wetland Trail is a 1.25 mile boardwalk through a sphagnum bog. The project cost over 30,000 dollars and was financed by the Fremont Area Foundation. In some area’s the sphagnum is as much as 40 feet deep, highly unusual. The area is full of wildlife such as great blue heron’s, kingfishers, owl’s, turtles, and muskrats. The Trail is located on the east side of Pickerel Lake at Camp Newaygo. The trail is free and open to the public.

The Coolbough Natural Areas is a 400-acre preserve owned by Brooks Township and managed jointly with The Nature Conservancy. The diversity of habitats is one of the features of the Coolbough Natural Areas that makes any visit an exciting trip. Visitors have the chance to explore ponds and wetlands, hike through white pine and white oak forest, search for butterflies and wildflowers on prairie and barrens remnants, and listen to the bubbling waters of Bigelow and Coolbough Creeks. Hunting is allowed for white-tail deer on this preserve to reduce an unnaturally high deer population in the area and reduce threats too many deer pose to our conservation targets. The preserve features an extensive trail system with horseback riding permitted on designated trails. Bring your binoculars for spectacular views of wildlife. Location from Newaygo, take M-37 to Croton Drive (at the intersection immediately north of the Muskegon River). Turn east on Croton and go 3.7 miles to Barberry Avenue. Turn north and go one mile; Barberry will end at 58th Street. Turn east (right) on 58th, which will curve to the north to become Hazelwood. The parking lot is on the corner of 58th and Hazelwood.

We encourage you to start to hike in Newaygo County Mi and begin “feel good” today. Visit HessLakeRentals.com for accommodations.

Tips And Guides To Backpacking And Hiking In Uganda

Camping April 11th, 2009

Come and try backpacking in Africa. Have you ever thought of having a vacation in Uganda? If not, this is the time to think of it. Backpacking is probably the best way to really experience Uganda’s place of interest. You interact directly with Ugandan local people, take part in a Ugandan cultural celebration, visit interesting both traditional and Christian religious sites and become a part of the current Ugandan community.

Uganda tourism provide many types of hiking

1. Guided Hiking Tour

I know you would like to know what a guided tour is all about. A guided hiking tour can range from a simple trip to a huge expedition depending on how you want your journey to be. In such a hiking journey, there is a provision of porters that show the way and carry your camping gear and other camping materials. The number of porters is depends on availability and the size of the group. Remember, these organized hiking treks can be arranged when you’re at home anywhere in this world or when you arrive in Uganda. Begging is not good for a man but if one helps in hiking, you should consider giving out something in appreciation. Deciding to use the porters may cost a little bit extra but it will help a lot in supporting the local economy and encourage locals to preserve the surrounding natural beauty.

2. Unguided Hiking in Uganda

Never undermine the importance of a porter in your hiking in Uganda. The best thing about the guided tour is that if you have a porter you have to carry your own backpack. The most you’ll carry will probably be no more than what your ***** pack can hold. The rest is carried by the porter which gives you the chance to have a look at the surroundings. But there are those hikers who prefer to hike independently in Uganda and Africa in general. You have to carry your own pack but the experience is so much better at least for most people, me included. Many guidebooks are available for who prefer the unguided trek. It will include details on backpacking hostels, landmarks, places to visit, lodges, shops for camping supplies and some will include a little bit of history.

3. Ugandan Safety and Security for Hikers

Remember, Uganda is a third world country and for that matter camping gear is expensive. In Uganda the cost of your hiking gear alone can feed a family for a year. In Uganda the gap between the rich and the poor is very high and for that hikers are sometimes targets for thieves. Be safe and never show any expensive electronic equipment or large sums of cash. You can take further precautions with hiking accessories such as cable-reinforced money belts, padlocks, secret compartments and steel nets to encase your backpack. Don’t forget that these are just secondary measure, when it comes to keeping you health and safe it, involves a little bit of common sense and logic.

Hiking Checklist Importance - 5 Reasons You Must Make One

Camping April 10th, 2009

Are you thinking about taking a hiking trip for yourself, to get away from the every day stress in your life? Maybe you want to go with some friends or your family and enjoy some quality time with them.

If this is the case, be sure to make a hiking checklist to be sure you do have everything you need. If you haven’t done this yet, you may regret it if you don’t.

Reasons For A Hiking Checklist -

1. Why should you make a hiking checklist for your next camping trip? The main reason is to improve your hiking trip. Suppose you want to bring something but it just does not make the trip. When you plan a trip, it is very stressful and often times, things that you want to bring end up being forgotten. By making this list, you can be assured that what you want is what you’ll be bringing with you.

2. The second reason a hiking list is important is to go shopping by it. Should this be your first or even second hiking, then you need to know what type of things to purchase at the store. If you have problems remembering what to bring, it is just as likely that you forget even the simple things at the store. So make a hiking checklist for the store can help you get what is needed and even what you want. Do not forget to bring the list with you.

3. What is another reason to make a hiking list for yourself? Understand that making a list is easy to create, so why would you not create one? If you have done your homework or have been hiking before, then you know what kind of things you want to bring or need to bring along with you. For this reason, it would be necessary to compile a list together so you will remember everything to bring. It can be done in just a matter of minutes.

4. Have you ever made a hiking list before? If not, you are probably wondering how to start one. Imagine yourself on the trip. What do you see yourself wearing? What do you see yourself eating and even drinking? The easy questions have the hard answers unless you imagine yourself hiking. From this, you can build a checklist.

5. Even though you can create your own list, sometimes you can draw a blank when trying to build one. Do some research and use the Internet to help your list along. You can find a large number of hiking checklist samples on the web. Some of these are often printable which means you can take them off the web, print them and use them as you go shopping. Make sure you look at that list well and add your own items to it.

The decision to make a list or not is really up to you. A hiking trip is a one to ensure that you have a good time. If you have a dull trip, it is likely you will not be going back anytime soon. This checklist will cover everything you need and everything you want to bring.

Just remember though if you are not making a list, you may not be as prepared for your hiking trip as you may think. Should you get hurt, will you have the supplies needed. What if it starts to rain, will you have what you need to keep a dry? It is important to make this list to have a good time and not worry.
